How does the Chat Feature deal with Personal Information that is Potentially Added to Chats?

The sharing of personal data in conversations can to a large extent be blocked by our system but read on for more guidance.

In short, whilst we discourage personal data being added to chats through our system's safeguarding feature, we'd recommend that you do not rely on that and accept that some chat transcripts will contain personal data. This is your data as you are the Data Controller. The definition of personal data is very broad and the threshold is low, “any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person”. For example, if a prospective student identifies his or her school or mentions that his brother or sister attends the same university then this may be personal data (as from that you would be able to identify the relevant individual). This means that it would be extremely difficult for us as a data processor to identify all personal data in conversation transcripts.
